I think I'll stop at the liquor store and grab another bottle of whiskey. I emptied my second to last one last night.

I had to fire a guy today. A friend and co-worker. Good worker at that. Decent guy to know. Company policy sucks sometimes.

Then my boss stepped down. Now I'll be reporting to his boss. That puts me at #3 from the top of the food chain. Not a good place for my taste. I don't like the spotlight.

Big projects are happening and Monday will be a crucial day in my career. If things don't go well, they'll be looking for a new #3 on Tuesday. I don't forsee any problems technically, but if I keep losing people, I won't have any techs to do the work. I'm not as young as I used to be either, so some of the tasks will suffer. (Those over 40 know about trying to see tiny colored bands and fine print quickly in low light. Not gonna happen that easily).

That and the wife was in a pissy mood from my playing Demigod too long last night. It was our night to watch TV, but I forgot. My bad.

Maybe I'll make up for it by drinking lots of whiskey and going online again tonight. 09

Know how you feel except in my case it's Gin. Before I got married the second time around I was pretty much a beer and vodka guy, however my wife likes gin and tonics so gin it is.

I've pretty much stayed out of the management path although I was a manager at NEC about 20 years ago. I never had to fire anyone. The worst I had to do was to give someone a bad review and that was tough enough for me even though it was well deserved. But yeah I can certainly see how that could suck big time.

Like they say, high nail gets the hammer.

There's two things that I always try to keep in mind.

#1 is "Does the check clear?" implying that as long as the check clears that's really what's important and everything else that goes along with the job is secondary.

#2 is "You can only do what you can do" meaning only worry about things you can control because to do otherwise is a waste of effort.

Tell me about it. I was pretty much fine until I hit about 52 and then it was like falling off a cliff. All the things that I used to do and took for granted suddenly became a great effort. Simple things like bending down under the desk to plug in a new mouse for instance became a great pain.

My advice is don't get old if you can help it.

Opps...i'm partly to blame in that i believe....tell her it was all the Aussie's faullt!!!

I would never like to have to fire someone. If it was a case of gross negligence or something, then that wouldn't be so bad...but canning them due to cutbacks, $$$, or whatever other bullshit excuses company exects use these to make more money..then no thanks....that i would rather not do.

If you find your self no longer employed on Tuesday...i keep telling DJ this...there is plenty of work Down Under for the skilled.
Once you get used to the hundreds of creatures living around you that can kill you whenever the hell they want..LOL...this isn't a bad place to live...

I'll get the entire Tyranny down here one day!!!!
What say you Mumble? When you retire, i could imagine you enjoying the lifestyle down here....

(subliminal message--MOVE TO AUSTRALIA>>>YOU KNOW YOU WANT TOO!!!!--end subliminal message)

@ Mumble - I wasn't gunning for the management job, but had to take it to keep things level in the shop. I was the Systems Engineer for many years before I got pulled in by the dark side. I'd go back to my old job if I didn't have to take too much of a pay cut.

@ BMF - No, it was totally my fault. We always watch The Mentalist on Thursdays and I got into Demigod. I was the one who chose to join that random pick up game.

I stopped in at Twin Liquors and sampled some Crown Royal Black. It's Crown Royal, but aged in Bourbon barrels. It's 90 proof instead of 80. It tastes awesome! Real smooth and full bodied. I'm having some right now as we speak.

All things work out for the better.

The guy I had to fire got a better job with more pay and benefits. It was good to hear from him today. I'm glad it worked out.

The EPA stuff from Monday is up and running too. I finished programming the last bit of it merely minutes ago. If I couldn't figure it out, we had a backup plan. I'm glad we didn't need to do it though.

We'll run a test overnight and then I'll take a backup of it all. One down if it doesn't crap out on me.

Did you guys avoid the McAfee debacle this morning? In case you didn't see it McAfee released a bad update to their corporate customers this morning. It identified an OS file as a virus and put a lot of computers into constant reboot. Hospitals, Colleges and some police departments(patrol car lappys had to be shutdown till fixed and so on) and such had to scramble and get by until IT could get around to each terminal in most cases.
