With the upgrades in trcking capabilities, it might not be enough to go through a proxy and hide your IP addy. JAVA can track you right through a proxy for instance. There are other ways of identifying you as well.

If you're trying to protect your privacy, I'd suggest a few things.

First, use a proxy server program to spoof your OS and browser. I use Anonymity 4 proxy. http://www.inetprivacy.com/a4proxy/

I have the paid version, but there's a free one in there too. There's an option in there to replace your OS and browser info with whatever you'd like. I normally just change the version number from something like mozilla 4 to mozilla 6.

You can use the proxy software to redirect your traffic through an external proxy, but that'll only give you one bounce. It also falls back to your real location if the proxy fails. Also, most of the good proxies have been replaced with either blackhats or government sponsored ones like Planetlab.

I'd suggest using private multiple hops instead.

Tor is an open source program and a group of volunteers that use their own servers to randomize traffic. If they're still operating (and there's no reason to think they're not), they can provide multiple hops. They can also kill JAVA apps and such.

Failing that, you can use an online proxy. I sometimes open Google and simply use their translator as a proxy. You just fill in the URL into the google language translator, select something like spanish to english and click translate. any traffic looks like it's coming from google.
